Complete your RSA courses for NSW – Quicker and Easier
Completing an RSA course for NSW opens many doors to employment and it takes between four and six hours to complete. (It took me just over 5 hours to do mine)
Fortunately in 2016, getting an RSA certificate just became a whole lot easier because now you can do it online!
A classroom course by comparison takes a full day.

NSW RSA Online – main points
- Until July 1, 2012, the RSA could only be done in a classroom – now it is available by email correspondence.
- You must do a course that is specifically designed for NSW laws (see below)
- There are providers online to do your RSA for NSW. The NSW government opened up RSA courses to a select group of established providers. After this it is expected to be opened up to many other training organisations.
- You will be issued with a photo ID card that you have to keep on your person at all times while working.
- Parramatta and Penrith classroom training is also available if you don’t have access to a computer.
Who needs it?
- Staff and Promotional staff involved in the sale, supply and service of alcohol;
- Volunteers and club directors who have liquor service responsibilities
- Crowd control security staff
- Managers and licensees
Staff including volunteers and managers who serve or supply alcohol in licensed premises in NSW as well as venue security staff must have completed an approved Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course and hold an RSA Certificate.

How do you get the required photo ID?
On completion of the online RSA a temporary certificate that is valid for 90 days is sent to you. You then make an appointment with a participating post office in NSW and get their photo taken and be issued with a photo ID card for RSA.
When do I have to do the course?
All employees involved in the service or supply of liquor have to obtain their RSA training course certificate before working.
Enforcement
The liquor laws provide stiff penalties for staff who supply alcohol to an intoxicated patron or minor. A licensee or venue staff member can be fined up to $11,000 or be issued an on-the-spot fine by way of a penalty notice.
See the Liquor Act 2007 for more information on rights and obligations of licensees and their staff.
How much?
An online course costs $109-$150. This includes $70 that the training organization has to pay to the NSW government for the competency card which you need to organise at a post office outlet.
Time required?
Can be completed in around 4 to 6 hours.
